Sephora Made Simple: My Must Haves

To anyone who can’t resist to know what others have inside that black and white striped bag, this post is as much for you as it is for those who simply feel far too overwhelmed with where to begin and what to buy! Sephora offers so many high end beauty products that the colours, packages, brands, smells, and promises can overwhelm even the most avid beauty gurus. I know that I have gone in for one item and left with many more. But for me personally, I have always from a young age enjoyed makeup and experimenting with new products.

This blog post eliminates the effort and the money needed to experiment with what is best, I have spent plenty of my own on your behalf!

I have put aside all biases on brands and packaging and completely narrowed down my must-haves to items that I have either tried to replace and could not, or else items that I am on my second and third time buy.

1. Lips:

a.) Dior’s Creme de Rose lip balm – I have gone through one of these beauties already and have tried to substitute it (because it is costly), for it’s budget friendly dupe

b.) Rose Salve but it is not the same. Although I love the salve, it does not have the same texture or smell that the Dior balm has. I can wear the Dior balm to bed and wake up with the residue still on my lips it is that nourishing, trust me, it is well worth the price!

Lip Colours:

Urban Decay’s Mega Matte in “Oblivion”- the swatch does not show it as the subtle purple grey colour that it is, I wear it to work all the time.

Sephora’s Luster Matte in “Deep Plum Luster” – This is a deep colour that is neither too red nor too purple, it is the PERFECT holiday or Fall dark lip colour.

Sephora’s Luster Matte in “Fig Luster” – I can’t wear bright pink lip colours, they don’t work with my reddish skin tone. This is the most amazing nude pink lip colour. The best part about these lipsticks is the long lasting formula, even after a coffee break!

2. Eyes & Eyebrows

a.) Anastasia’s Brow Wiz in “Dark  Brown”- I know that everyone loves eyebrows these days. It is easy to go overboard with the product, but with these brow pencils it would be difficult to do so. The thin pencil allows you to outline the top and bottom of the brow and blend with the brush for flawless brows. I believe I am on my 4th!

b.) Clinique’s Pretty Easy Liquid Eyelining Pen in “Black”- I am an eyeliner expert. It is my makeup staple, I feel naked without eyeliner, and I am a huge fan of the winged look. I have used every liner and brand from pencil to fine and thick felt tipped. The most smudge resistant, dark black, and thin tipped felt-tipped liquid look eyeliner (mouthful), is this one and you must try it.

Eyelashes:

I know everyone raves about Too Faced “Better Than Sex” mascara, I have used it and I do agree that it is a good mascara, but moving beyond the cult-style hype for it, this Lancome Grandiose Extreme Wide-Angle Volume mascara is an amazing mascara. I typically use a drugstore brand mascara for everyday use, but this is my 3rd tube of Lancome’s mascara “with the rose” lid, and I marvel in the perfection of it’s brush. It also comes in waterproof, but I don’t prefer waterproof makeup.

3. Hands:

a.) L’Occitane hand lotion. I keep one in my purse and one on the night stand. I love putting this almond scented one on dry hands before bed because the smell stays with you while you fall asleep (yummy when it sticks to your blankets too).

b.) Mentioned above, I prefer using this multi-purpose Rose Salve as hand balm over lip balm.

4. Hair:

Bumble and Bumble’s dry shampoo powder is magic. I don’t even want to do a review, just go buy this. It is magic powder that gives volume and fights greasy strands. The end. On my 2nd bottle, I thought I would try Batiste spray in between my purchase but it was NOT the same.

5. Face:

a.) Foundation: Clinique’s “Stay-Matte Oil-Free Makeup” in Creamwhip (04). I have the most oily skin, with breakouts. This foundation along with MACs is by far my favourite. I have tried: Tarte, Kat Von D, Makeup Forever, and various drug store brands, but this is full coverage without the caking or pore clogging.

b.) Concealer: Nars’ Radiant Creamy Concealer in “Vanilla”, perfect for under eye concealer as well as contour highlighting!

Bronzer:

I know contouring and all of the palettes available to do so is another trend. I have a few myself, but I don’t consider them necessary staple items. A good bronzer for your skin tone can completely do the trick. Again, I know the major fan favourite is either Nars “Laguna” or Benefit’s “Hoola” but I champion Too Faced Chocolate Soleil. Not only does it smell like hot chocolate, it does not make me break out or give an orangey undertone throughout the day. I have hit pan on this bronzer and will soon be purchasing my 2nd, it has lasted me awhile.

I hope this post helps those who wanted to try something new or weren’t sure what to try first. Would love to hear other favourites! After all, I may stick to my personal must-haves but doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy trying someone else’s!

Live Colourfully,

Kayla

  1. Kayla, I am checking your blog and I saw that u also have a problem with oily skin. I have tried Mac foundantion, the clinique oil free foundation also, and several others that are quite famous but NONE can be compared to Mary Kay foundation. It is made from clay and covers everything! You should try it.. I can’t live without it anymore and I promise you that if you try it, you also won’t be able to!!
